Learning outcomes
Students will be able to use the great amount of data that the numismatic evidence offers for the historical reading of a territory and for the interpretation of the archaeological context. They will obtain all the critical notions necessary to interpret numismatic iconography as a fundamental source for the study of politic, religious and artistic history. Students will learn how to identify and date coins of various periods and how to create repertories and databases.

- Outline of ancient Greek and Roman Numismatics.
- Numismatic evidence in historical research.

- Frontal lessons.
- Direct analysis of Roman coins.
- Pratical exercises in reading, identifying and cataloguing of
numismatic materials.
Assessment methods
During the Course: check through practical tests on
ancient coins.
Final examination: examination on teaching modules listed
above, in order to verify critical and methodological
skills gained by the student. The student will be required to
make connections between several distinct numismatic contexts,
showing analytical and historical skills. Will be assessed with a
mark of excellence the acquired ownership of the technical language
and the ability to use the numismatic evidence as historical
source.
Teaching tools
Lessons with video projector and pratical exercises on Roman materials with use of repertories, catalogues and informatic sources for the historical interpretation of the numismatic documents.
