Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired a general overview of the History of Rome, with an interdisciplinary perpective; he knows how to apply the methodology, the main research tools and how to read and interpret the main historical sources.

Course contents

12 CFU

  1. Introduction to the subject – reading of some original sources in order to allow students to have direct contact with original texts and the methodology to interpret them
  2. The s.c. de Baccanalibus a.186 a.C.
  3. General orientation and knowledge of Roman History to be acquired through the reading and understanding of the books indicated in the Bibliography..
6 CFU (first module)

N.B. It is important to use a good Historical Atlas.

Students who cannot attend the lecture course should contact the professor before the end of the course. This is necessary especially for students who are still enrolled in the old  system (pre- 1999).

Teaching methods

During the classes the texts choosen by the lecturer and related to the topic of this year will be discussed and analysed. The texts will be presented in original language and a translation will also be provided. Students will be introduced to the use of data-base and on line tools for historical research.

Assessment methods

The assessment will be at the end of the course and will consist in an oral examination. The student will be asked to answer questions on the general part, studied with help of the manuals and on the topic and texts discussed in class.

Teaching tools

Geographical and Historical maps. Texts and transaltion and other sources will be collected and made available to students.
