Learning outcomes

The course proposes an interweaving among the most flexible historiographical disciplines and a set of analytical tools differentiated through an open integration between the social sciences. The comparison between fields of analysis, interpretation assumptions and methods of different search aims to enhance the capability of critical guidance of students.

For students, drafting a written report on one or more thick texts or dissimilar materials from many sources will stimulate attitudes revise and promote the aging of autonomous capacity for judgement on complex issues. Is required knowledge for major lines of contemporary history and to this end is advised to consult a good university textbook (for example: Pasquale Villani, L'età contemporanea, il Mulino, Bologna 1998)

Course contents

Course title: The Dynamics and Variety of Industrial Capitalism. From the First to the Second Globalization

Course contents:

   The course is divided into two parts, of different scope and depth.
   The first is purely introductory and illustrates the evolution of the system of industrial enterprises in advanced economies from the nineteenth century to today. The phases and growth factors are considered by highlighting the close interrelationship between production and processing national and international contexts, with reference to changing technologies and markets, political and institutional variables and social and cultural patterns. A major focus is attributed to genetic traits and phenomenology of the diversity of the great models of industrial capitalism: a question, this, that in recent decades is the subject of widespread interest and renewed analysis.
   The second part focuses on the Italian case. The experience of industrial development in the country, for the particular configuration of the production system between small and large enterprise and among sector private and public sphere, for the size and character of state intervention in a long stage, for dualisms marked, for the plurality of acceleration and while the elements of continuity and gradualism, finally for the rise and decline in the last two decades of the twentieth century, is, overall, a hybrid model of industrialization and heterogeneous, somewhat distant from these patterns of reference “classics”. Accordingly, to investigate the Italian case may provide an interesting contribution to the comparative study of the various domestic cases in the new scenarios of globalisation.

Time and Place of Lessons

Lessons will begin on February 3 and will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 5 to 7 p. m.  in Aula Capitani, Dipartimento di Storia Culture Civiltà, Piazza San Giovanni in Monte, 2.

 

Readings/Bibliography

The examination provides a differential commitment between students attending lessons and not attending.
Students not attending to the textbooks of List A will add at least three monographs on choice of List B . The following list is an initial bibliography; aligns frameworks synthetic broader and texts on more specific aspects; will be released in early expanded version of the course. It is recommended, therefore, for students not attending to agree even with the teacher the choice of texts.
The students will agree on their programme during lessons, in relation to the needs of individual deepening and the eventual drafting of a paper.

Teaching methods

At the start of the lessons will be discussed the teaching of the course and will cover the complete bibliography.
Special and deepening lines will be defined in relation to individual interests or group. For all students, and especially for those who decide to write a paper, there are specific exercises introductory on time different from that of lessons and be agreed.
Students interested can read texts in English or French, even if knowledge of such languages is not a barrier to entry.

For the drafting of writings is the recommended frequency of specialized libraries and it is advisable to use the computer.

Assessment methods

Oral exam covering the textbooks. Students attending may draw up a paper which support a part of the final.

Teaching tools

The computer will be used mainly for the preparation of teaching materials that the teacher and students consider useful, but may also serve to carry out a wider, more personal search for bibliography.
