Learning outcomes
The Laboratory deals with architecture design with particular attention to public building and its relationship with the dimension of the contemporary city.
Course contents
The Laboratory will concern a design at different scales, from the urban issues to the architectural design of a public building. This design will apply to urban places which have lost their own character and which are available for their transformation for new uses and new formal identities.
During its development, the design will, first, consider the project of an urban sector and its relationship with the urban dimension. In this context will be important, both, the relationship with the singularity of the place, trying to reflect this singularity within the architectural design, and the objective of building, or re-building, a place of the city.
Subsequently, will start the project of a public building, a type of urban building which, better of others, participates in the culture of places, reflecting in their architectural shape the contradictions of the civil life. The design will intend to experiment a critical reflexion on the relationship between the specific architectural shape of a public building and its significant within the urban structure, according to the perspective opened by the concept of “primary element” given by Aldo Rossi in the “The architecture of the city”.
The architectural design will be developed in an study area of the city of Bologna now deprives of a precise role in the contemporary city, and for which its redefinition is required starting from its future public vocation. The study area chosen for the design work is the ancient military barrack named Sani: it is an area of beyond 40 hectares, placed between the streets Ferrarese and Stalingrad, in the northern part of the city. Inside this area, there are several buildings, different for their position, dimension, and architectural quality. The project will have to foresee the conservation of part of these buildings, allowing for a reflection on the relationship between the ancient buildings and the new project.
The new project will foresee the realization inside the study area of some public spaces and some residential and service buildings, which dimension are defined by the town planning rules. To these buildings, is added an auditorium for the symphonic music which will be organized as a great room for concert and a smaller room for the chamber music.

Teaching methods
The Laboratory plans an exercise of architectural design. It will be organized in two different phases for the first and the second semester: the first will be a concept design for the whole study area; and the second consists in the architectural design of a collective building.
A series of lessons will be developed over the two semesters, concerning the urban issues of the site, the theoretical issues on the contemporary urban design, and the typological issues on collective buildings.
Assessment methods
The exam will consist in a presentation of the architectural and urban design produced during the year, and in the discussion about the theoretical reasons that led the student to the formal definition of his project.
The assessment will be based on the awareness of the architectural choices and on the depth of the theoretical argumentation, and also on the quality and the completeness of the representation.
