Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will have acquire d a basic knowledge of Russian history and Russian literature from the 10th century to the mid 19th century. The course will introduce students to the main strategies of analysis of texts of different types and periods.   

Course contents

THE EVOLUTION OF RUSSIAN PROSE FROM ČECHOV TO PASTERNAK

After a short historical and cultural introduction to the period between 1881 and 1953, the students will be given critical analysis of some works of authors whose literary activity unfolds mainly between the end of XIX century and the year of Stalin's death.

Teaching methods

During each class texts in Russian and in Italian translation will be read and analysed.   

Assessment methods

Oral exam.

At the beginning of the exam the student will present the list of the books he intends to discuss.

The oral test consists in an oral interview which has the aim of evaluating the critical and methodological ability of the students. The students will be invited to discuss the texts on the course programme. The student must demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography.

The student will be asked to answer questions concerning the historical and literary background of the relevant period (see «Readings for historical and literary background» and «Readings for individual study» in the box «Recommended readings»). As for further readings, the student will have chosen six works from among the ones treated during the lessons (see «Texts» in the box «Recommended readings»).

Those students who are able to demonstrate a wide and systematic understanding of the issues covered during the lessons, are able to use these critically and who master the field-specific language of the discipline will be given a mark of excellence.

Those students who demonstrate a mnemonic knowledge of the subject with a more superficial analytical ability and ability to synthesize, a correct command of the language but not always appropriate, will be given a ‘fair' mark.

A superficial knowledge and understanding of the material, a scarce analytical and expressive ability that is not always appropriate will be awarded a pass mark or just above a pass mark.

Students who demonstrate gaps in their knowledge of the subject matter, inappropriate language use, lack of familiarity with the literature in the programme bibliography will not be given a pass mark.
