Learning outcomes


This course will focus on examination of the molecular basis of human diseases and the application of genetic, biochemical, and molecular biological principles to an understanding of the diseases. Course will focus on mechanisms and regulation of immune system.

Course contents

Principles of pathology, aetiology and pathogenesis. Necrosis and apoptosis. Hyperplasia, hypertrophy.

Acute inflammation (Classical signs. Vascular response and cellular events. Chemical mediators. Patterns of inflammation and systemic effects.) Chronic inflammation (Mononuclear infiltration. Granulomatous inflammation. Tubercolosis). Wound healing. Sclerosis.

Pathology of the vascular system. Oedema, haemostasis, thrombosis and embolism. Infarction and shock.

Cancer (Definition, epidemiological aspects. Molecular basis of cancer. Tumor growth. Mechanisms and pathways of invasion and metastasis. Carcinogenic agents. Clinical cancer pathology).

The immune system as the fundamental defense system of the organism. Immune alterations as causes of disease.
