Second cycle degree programme (LM) in
Aerospace Engineering (cod. 8197)
Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Aerospace Engineering (cod. 8197)
Course contents
Turbulence. 1.Definitions. Properties of the Navier Stokes equations. Statistical averages. Homogeneity and isotropy. Correlations, spectra and scales in turbulence. 2.Reynolds stress tensor and its closure. Spectral analysis and dynamics of vorticity. 3.Homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. Kolmogorov theory and equation for correlation. 5.Wall turbulence. Budget of turbulent kinetic energy, inhomogeneity and spatial fluxes, production and dissipation. Turbulent boundary layer, turbulent channel and pipe: theoretical results and applications. 5.Thermally driven turbulent flows. Natural convection. In the second part of the course students will be asked to carry out a statistical analysis of turbulent fields obtained under different forcing conditions.
Readings/Bibliography
"Turbulent Flows" S.B. Pope.
Lecture notes from the teacher.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercise classes given by theacher.
Assessment methods
The assessment will be done through the discussion of the reports compiled during the lessons and the answers of some written questions. The student will need to show a full comprehension of the topics discussed in the lectures.
