Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Docente: Giuseppe Maino
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: INF/01
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in HISTORY AND PRESERVATION OF THE ARTISTIC HERITAGE (cod. 0890)

Learning outcomes

The course prepares the student to the use of computer-science critical tools for the acquisition and the processing of digital images of artistic and historical works, including diagnostic images in the different frequency bands, and for the realization of virtual reality simulations and interventions of virtual (digital) restoration based on a knowledge of the main degradation processes of cultural heritage and its present condition derived from the multispectral diagnostic images in digital format.

Course contents

Digital image capture in the various frequencies. Scanners and digital cameras, hyperspectral camera.

Definition of digital image. Bitmap or raster images and vector images.

Fundamentals of visual perception. Cones and rods. Theories of color (from Newton, Goethe to Gestalt psychology and modern cognitive neuroscience).

The main mathematical tools for the improvement and image processing. Histograms, filters, Fourier transform.

Main principles of compression of images. Digital formats.

Processing of color images. Tri-color and full color models. The color in printed publications and on-screen.

Virtual image reconstruction and restoration. Recomposition of fragments of frescoes. Patterns of degradation and noise.

Virtual reality and three-dimensional simulations. Second Life and virtual world. The net.art.

Main software environments for developing applications of virtual reality simulation.

Pattern recognition. Image segmentation. OCR and ICR.

Using the programs Photoshop and Gimp. Introduction to open-source software.

Teaching methods

During the course handouts and other teaching materials on DVD will be distributed by the teacher.

Assessment methods

The examination will focus on an interview and a presentation by the student of a case study of an artifact of historical and artistic value on her/his choice.

Teaching tools

Power Point presentations and exercises at computer.
