Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing a comprehensive knowledge of the development of medieval thought and at fostering the acquisition of the prerequisites for an adequate comprehension of its textual production.  The study of the subject matters dealt with should fovour the attainment of the skills serviceable for the analysis of the texts and the critical assessment of their theoretical and historical relevance.

Course contents

The course shall deal with the following subject matter: Theology, logic and reality in Anselm of Canterbury.  In particular, the Proslogion and the De casu diaboli shall be read and commented upon.  The emphasis shall be chiefly put on the relationship between the development of Anselm's theological programme and his use of language analysis.

Teaching methods

The course shall consist in lectures and seminar discussions and shall organise, if possible, the presentation and discussion of essays prepared by the students on texts or subject matters agreed upon with the teacher.

Assessment methods

The examination shall consist in an oral interview on the subjects dealt with in the course and in a discussion on the essays submitted by the students.

If possible, the texts read and commented upon shall be made available on the Web.
