Learning outcomes

To develop an integrated approach to the study of oucropping and buried Quaternary successions, including geometric description of sedimentary bodies, advanced techniques of stratigraphic correlation, use of palaeontological, geotechnical and geochemical data for detailed characterization of Quaternary deposits.

Course contents

The Quaternary: stratigraphic subdivision; dating techniques of Quaternary sediments; climatic evolution and sea-level changes in the Quaternary; Milankovich cycles; fluvial terraces and other morphologic features; basic concepts on depositional environments and facies; core description and analysis; interpretation of gamma ray logs, electric logs, and piezocone penetration tests; stratigraphy of Holocene alluvial, deltaic, and coastal deposits; forced regressive deposits; incised valleys
