  • Docente: Luigi Angiolini
  • Credits: 4
  • SSD: CHIM/05
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Industrial Chemistry (cod. 0882)

Learning outcomes

The course gives knowledges concerning the main chemical procedures and instrumental techniques that are used to recognize the chemical structure and composition of synthetic polymers, to investigate their thermal behaviour in different conditions and the degradation processes operated by chemical and physical agents.

Course contents

Macromolecules: nomenclature, structure and characterization methods.

Chemical characterization of polymeric materials: elemental analysis, functional groups analysis, pyrolisis.

Structural characterization: IR and NMR spectroscopy. Spectra of industrial polymers.

Molecular characterization: gel permeation chromatography, viscosimetry, vapor pressure and membrane osmometry, light scattering, MALDI-TOF.

Thermal characterization: TGA, DSC and DTA.

Crystalline and amorphous polymers.

Oxidative, photochemical, thermal and mechanical degradation of polymers.

Additives for polymers. Antioxidants and UV stabilizers.
