Course contents

Physical and chemical, characteristic of metals. Structure of metals. Unit cells and crystal structures. Solidification of  a solid-solution alloy. Solid solutions and phase equilibrium.  Fe-C diagram.  Relationship between properties and the phase diagram.  Effect of alloying elements. . Designations and classification of cast irons and steels. Stainless steels. Heat treatments of metal alloys: annealing, quenching and tempering phenomena.   Transformation of metals, plastic flow in hot and cold working. Theory of precipitation hardening. Decomposition of austenite; formation of pearlite, bainite and martensite. Factors affecting hardenability of metals; creep, fracture and fatigue. Surface treatments. Non-ferrous alloys of:  alluminum, magnesium, copper, titanium, nickel and cobalt. Metallographic procedures.  Microscopic observations. Mechanical properties. Deterioration and protection against corrosion.
