Learning outcomes
A sound theoretical basis as well as a working knowledge of the
fundamental
mathematical methods aimed at solving simple mechanical problems
for continuum systems.
Course contents
Kinematics of continua. Continuous bodies. Deformations. Strain
tensors. Transformation of areas and volumes. Transport theorems.
Principles of continuum mechanics.
Principle of conservation of mass. Momentum balance principles.
Consequences of momentum balance laws. The Piola-Kirchhoff
stresses. Fluids. Ideal fluids. Newtonian fluids. The
Navier--Stokes equations. Elastic solids. Hyperelastic bodies.
Linear elasticity.
Principles of thermodynamics.
Heat equation. Definition of a material as a dynamical system.
First Principle of Thermodynamics. Second Principle of
Thermodynamics. Applications to elastic bodies. Thermodynamic
restrictions for viscous fluids.

Standard lectures on the mathematical foundaments of discrete and continuum mechanics held and exercise classes held by a teaching assistant.
