- Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Industrial Chemistry (cod. 0884)
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student acquired the basic knowledge for the chemical-physical characterization of solids, in particular referring to the relation between the structure and property of the inorganic solids in order to point out their utilization as structural and functional materials.
The student is introduced to the main diffraction techniques both towards single crystals and crystal powders. The student can also access to microscopic techniques (optic microscopy, TEM, SEM, AFM) to characterize the materials.
Course contents
Introduction to crystallography. Crystalline structures. Crystal structure and space lattice: primitive translation vectors. Bravais lattices. Diffraction from crystals. Reciprocal lattice. X-ray diffraction. Single crystal: structure determination methods. X-rays powder diffraction: identification of unknown crystalline phases. Chemical bonds in solids. Metals. Ionic, covalent and molecular crystals. Lattice energy. Ionic radii. Some important structure types. Dislocations and, vacancies and stacking faults.Natural inorganic and synthetic materials of environmental interest (asbestos, ophiolites, air particulate, synthetic fibres): description of their hazard for human health related to their chemical-structural properties.Inorganic nanocrystals and nanotubes: description of their technological applications related to their chemical-structural properties. Principal relations between property and structure of a material.
