Course contents

1. Real and ideal gases. Kinetic model of ideal gases: molecular velocities, effusion and diffusion.

2.The equipartition of energy. Boltzmann distribution law and the molecular interpretation of temperature. Statistical fundaments of kinetics and thermodynamics and the relation between microscopic and bulk properties.

3. The principles of thermodynamics and the derived state functions: applications to chemical and phase equilibria. Effects of temperature and pressure on equilibria.

4. Systems with more than one phase or components. Partial molar quantities. Chemical potential. Ideal and real solutions. Colligative properties.

5. Electrolite solutions. Ionic activity and the Debye-Huckel theory. Colligative properties of electrolite solution. Biological membranes.

6. Thermodynemics of electrochemical systems. Biological oxidation.

7. Chemical kinetics: reaction rate, order and molecularity. Reaction rates theories and temperature dependance. Complex reactions and reactions in solution. Enzymatic catalysis.

8. Spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry
