Course contents
In this course different translation strategies will be discussed and practised on the basis of semispecialised texts (newspapers, websites etc.) belonging to different thematic areas and text types. Special attention will be paid to divergent syntactic structures, idioms and technical expressions in the two languages from a contrastive point of view. Lexis will be particularly analysed in a pragmatic context, collocations will be valued in their co- and context and semantic focus conditions will be discussed.
Starting from a translation oriented source text analysis and going through rephrasing stages of source text expressions, strategic steps of translation shall be discussed. A functional and pragmatic approach to translation shall be favored and applied through simulated professional assignments, taking into account needs of end users and relevant cultural factors.Readings/Bibliography

Teaching methods
After a short theoretical and methodological introduction, translations will be regularly assigned for individual or group work using apposite translation tools and reference texts. Students are expected to autonomously find, collect and use relevant reference texts in both languages. Translations will be discussed and constantly evaluated according to a functional and pragmatic approach.
Assessment methods
Intermediate assessment
During the course two intermediate assessments with individual grades will take place.
Final assessment
Translation of a text (approximately 250 words) on topics discussed during the course. Time limit: 120 minutes. Mono- and bilingual dictionaries can be used.
Teaching tools
Overhead projector, e-learning Moodle site, multimedia data base Forlixt1 containing films in Italian and German, CD-ROMs, online databases, dictionaries and other materials in Italian and German. Students are expected to use the Moodle e-learning portal.
