Learning outcomes

The course means to provide a good knowledge about some of the main issues of Medieval History and a model for deepening a specif topic.

Course contents

In the first section (about 40 hours) we will discuss about some of the main topics of the History of the Middle Ages, like the passage from the late Antiquity to the High Middle Ages or the break of the barbars until the Reform of the Church or the Communs.

The second section(about 20 hours)  will focus on the topic of preachers, analyzing some sources and specific cases. In particular, the relationship between the preacher and itspublic, the means used to keep attention high, the reaction of the crowd, the ways and the times for preaching. We will examine sources about this topic.

Readings/Bibliography

Every student must know a manual (M. Montanari, "Storia medievale") and  one (6 credits)  or two (12 credits) books from a list. For the second section (12 credits) students have to read M.G. Muzzarelli,  "Pescatori di uomini - Predicatori e piazze alla fine del medioevo".

Teaching methods

For every topic we will present a source and the most recent storiographic discussion.

About the topic of preachers we will read, comment and cross among them different kinds o sources.

Assessment methods

Oral test.

Teaching tools consist of presentation and comment of sources and of the most recent and reliable historiographic literature about the main topics of the course.
