Learning outcomes

The intent is to become aware of the main types of metallic materials used in industry. Relationships between structure and properties of materials. Selection criteria of metals and alloys.

Course contents

Generalities on the formation of metallic alloys, phase diagrams and solid state transformations. Metallurgical processes for the production of metals and alloys. Chemical and physical basic for the production of composite. Dispersion in liquid and solid phases: methods and techniques. Interaction between matrix and reinforcement.

Mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Behaviour of metallic alloys under static, cyclic and dynamic stresses. Mechanisms for the formation and propagation of defects. Morphology of fracture surface.
Joining, cutting and thermal treatment processes for metals and alloys. Discussion on total and partial costs of different. Defect control procedures for casting, working and welded joins. Selection criteria of metallic materials and composites as a function of use. General principles on production managing and cost analysis of raw materials and their transformation.
