Learning outcomes

For a theoretical and practical knowledge of restoration methods applied to monuments, it is necessary to study in dept issues concerning: the conservation ethics of works of art and the historical evolution of the restoration interventions; the utilization of building materials and the intrinsic and environmental causes of their deterioration; the diffusion and transportation processes of fluids in porous materials; the guide-lines to choose products and their application techniques for cleaning, consolidating and protecting interventions on the materials, as well as control methods of the restoration works.

Course contents

-       Conservation ethics and historical phases of the monument restoration

-       The building and decorative stones and their deterioration

-       Water in masonries and fluid movements in porous materials

-       Consolidating and protective products for stone materials

-       Comparative evaluation of consolidating and protective products

-       Efficacy, safety and control of cleaning interventions

-       Inorganic binders, mortars and plasters

-       Organic binders and organic polymers for restoration

-       Deterioration of consolidating and protective polymers
