Learning outcomes

According to the Common European Framework of  Reference, B1 level enables students to learn the following communicative skills:

  • Comprehension of oral speech and written text about family, work, school, free-time, etc.;
  • Oral and written production typical of linguistic situations related to journeys in foreign countries aimed at studying or doing research, etc;
  • Reporting experiences or events, describing situations (such as wishes, hopes, objectives etc.), and providing reasons and brief explanations related to an idea or a project;
  • Expressing simple and coherent opinions related to personal interests. 

Course contents

2.1 Grammar Contents

Verbal noun I: usual actions, descriptions, tastes and preferences, interests, wishes and opinions

  • Expressing opinions with (no) creer / pensar / opinar / parecer + que + indicative / subjunctive
  • Expressing value judgments, giving advices, suggestions, expressing feelings, certainties and doubts with the subordinating structure V1 + que + V2
  • Giving information with an indirect style with the use of the structure Me han dicho / dijeron  / decían + que + información
  • Expressing a wish with me gustaría + infinitive, ojalá / que + subjunctive and through the use of the structure V1 + que + V2
  • Expressing doubts with the adverbs quizás, tal vez, seguramente, etc. + indicative / subjunctive y a lo mejor + indicative
  • Formulating instructions and advice; prohibiting through the imperative
  • Expressing  beginning, reiteration, conclusion and duration of an action with some verbal periphrasis: ponerse + a + infinitive, volver + a + infinitive, dejar + de + infinitive, seguir + gerund, etc.
  • Verbal forms of the Subjunctive

 

Verbal noun II: narration and description related to the past and the future; hypothesis and advices; instructions and obligations

  • Expressing future actions referred to the past and probability in the past through the use conditional
  • Expressing future actions preceding other actions  or future moments with the futuro compuesto
  • Expressing hypotheses that are not fulfilled; referring to information about the future with an indirect style (condicional compuesto)
  • Expressing temporal circumstances through conjunctions such as antes de (que), cuando, mientras, después de, en cuanto, tan pronto como, al, siempre que, desde que, hasta que, etc.
  • Expressing condition with si and other conjunctions

 

Nexus (prepositions, conjunctions,etc.)

  

  • Expressing the cause with (no) porque + indicative / subjunctive; the purpose with para + infinitive and para (que) + subjunctive
  • Objecting through the conjunction aunque + indicative / subjunctive
  • Expressing the consequence with tan, tanto, tant-o, tant-a, tant-os, tant-as, tal, etc.,and with the phrases en consecuencia and por (lo) tanto

  • Expressing addition with además, asimismo, encima, incluso

  • Expressing correction with mejor dicho
  • Expressing distancing or a light objection with de todos modos
  • Summing up what has been said or written with en conclusión, en definitive, en fin and al fin and al cabo

  • Strengthening a sentence with de hecho and en realidad 

 

2.2 Lexical contents

Time, date and prices, places and climates, house (structure, housework, etc.), clothing, health, food and drink, free-time activities, means of transport, general information on countries where Spanish is spoken (geography, politics, culture, etc.)

Students can also learn independently at the language laboratories in the Linguistic Centre (CLIRO) and all the instruments it offers: teaching tools, multimedia software, DVD films, satellite, Internet.

Teaching methods

In order to help students to prepare for aptitude tests, CLIRO organizes blended modules made up as follows:

  • Group work (traditional lessons with exercises, activities, grammar and lexical explanations on the base of all the topics of the E-learning Platform)
  • Discussion forums to interact on-line with tutors and other students
  • Exercises and practice through the CLIRO E-learning Platform

Assessment methods

Final exam will consist of a 60 minutes computer based written test.
