Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge about electrical circuit theory, circuit analysis methods and operating principles of electric machines.
Course contents
Basic concepts
Circuit elements. Voltage and current. Power and energy.
Passive and active elements. Sign conventions.
Kirchhoff's laws. Network topology.
Resistive circuits
Resistors. Independent voltage and current sources. Series and
parallel circuits. Current and voltage dividers. Source
transformations.
Nodal and mesh analysis. Superposition principle. Thevenin's and
Norton's theorems.
Sinusoidal steady state analysis
Capacitors. Inductors.
Phasors. Impedance and admittance. Circuit analysis in the phasor
domain
Power in AC circuits: active, reactive, apparent. Complex
power.
Power factor correction. Maximum power transfer. Resonance.
Three-phase systems: wye and delta loads, balanced and unbalanced
systems, power in three-phase systems.
Transient analysis
First order RC and RL circuits. Transient and steady state
respose.
Zero input and zero state respose. Second order RLC circuits.
Electric machines
Magnetic circuits. Hopkinson's law. Self and mutual
inductuction.
Power losses in electrical machines.
Transformers: principle of operation, quations, equivalent circuit,
short and open circuit tests, efficiency.
Rotating magnetic field.
Induction machines: Principle of operation, equations, equivalent
circuit, characteristics.
DC machines: Principle of operation, DC motors and generators,
equations, characteristics.
