Learning outcomes

The course gives competence on non conventional processing of materials and general process planning activities in relation to product quality, total cost, production rates and flexibility.

Course contents

1. NON CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL REMOVAL PROCESSES:Electro-discharge machining (EDM), Chemical machining, Electrochemical Machining, Ultrasonic Machining. Examples 2. SHEET METAL CUTTING Mechanical shearing, blanking, shaving, fine blanking; Thermal cutting: Oxyfuel cutting, Plasma cutting, Laser Cutting (LBM) Electron beam cutting (EBM) Non conventional cutting: water jet cutting 3. WELDING TECHNOLOGIES High energy beam welding: laser welding, electron beam welding, hybrid welding Friction welding, friction stir welding, ultrasonic welding, solid state welding, diffusion bonding. 4. POWDER METALLURGY Powder production, compaction, sintering. Calibration and post-treatment. Properties of sintered products; Hot isostatic pressing. Powder forming. Selective laser sintering (SLS) of metals, polymers and sand. 6. SURFACE COATINGS Physical vapour deposition (PVD), Chemical vapour deposition (CVD). 7. FORMING MACHINES Hammers, Screw presses, Mechanical Presses, Hydraulic presses.
