Learning outcomes

Acquisition of advanced instruments for analysing the structures of complex linguistic expressions and meanings, in order to identify and remove structural obstacles to translation.

Course contents

Works preliminary to translation: options for interclausal linkage

a) Grammatical and textual strategies: Complex sentence, juxtaposition, co-ordination

b) Coding and inferencing.
Complex sentence: full coding, undercoding and inferential enrichment, overcoding. Conceptual structures and semantic structures.
Juxtapositon: inferential bridging, anaphora.
Encapsulators and their use in complex sentence, juxtaposition and co- ordination
c) A case study: conceptual structures and forms of expressions of purpose

d) Communicative perspective within the complex sentence
