A wave generator is an object of common use for the construction of physical models of hydraulic sea where it needs to be operationally simulated wave action.

Wave generation system consists of a piston vertically scrolling of arbitrary geometry, which control system is able to generate the signal by means of the integration of the equation of conservation of mass. This differential equation is able to ensure the balance between the fluid displaced by the piston and that absorbed by the wave field imposed.

The displacement of the wave paddle is controlled by means of a time series generated through a flexible procedure applicable to plunger-type wave makers having paddles of different geometry, installed in experimental facilities of different size. Such a characteristic allows the potential trade of this technology to a wide range of market, due to the fact that it is easily adaptable to any wave tank or flume, independently from its dimension. A further advantage of this technology is related to the absence of waves propagated in the opposite direction to the desired wave field. Since the plunger-type wave generator has always a vertical wall at the rear of the wave paddle (i.e., the wave flume extremity or the wave tank side-wall), there is no chance of generating a wave in the opposite direction. This means both energy-saving and no need of an additional wave absorber to dampen the unwanted wave.
