64674 - ELEMENTI DI MATEMATICA E INFORMATICA

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Docente: Daniele Fazzi
  • Credits: 3
  • SSD: MAT/01
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical methodologies for products and processes (cod. 5881)

Learning outcomes

In this course the students acquire basic knowledge and understanding about the most common mathematical elements and functions in the description of physical and chemical-physical phenomena. The concepts of limits, derivatives and differentials, the calculation of integrals and multivariable functions will be introduced and commented with practical examples and exercises. The course aims also to provide a general understanding about statistics and data analysis. Furthermore, fundamental concepts related to the definition of algorithm, variable declaration, flow control constructs (if-then-else), "do" loops, data structures (one-dimensional and two-dimensional arrays, vectors and matrices), libraries, and simple scripting will be provided. Students will be able to use the basic functions of spreadsheet programs and the functions of interest for data analysis and their graphical representation.

Course contents

The course introduces the basic concepts of linear algebra, mathematical analysis and numerical calculus.

In the first part the notions of vector, vector space, matrix and related algebraic operations will be introduced. The concepts of function, limit, derivative and integral will be consolidated, providing application examples of practical importance for physics and chemistry. The basic concepts of statistical data analysis will be introduced, deepening the notions of distribution and regression procedures.

In the second part of the course, the basic notions of numerical calculation will be provided through the use of spreadsheets. Logical operations, control constructs and conditional formulas will be introduced, together with the statistical analysis of the data and their graphical representation.

Teaching methods

The course includes classical lectures and computer-based exercises for practical applications.

Assessment methods

The final examination consists of two parts: a first one, assessing the basic concepts of linear algebra and mathematics, a second one related to a numerical exercise (data analysis) via computer-based program.

Teaching tools

1) PC + beamer, openboard, lecture handouts
2) Computer exercises
3) Lecture materials presented  will be made available to the student through the platform VIRTUALE.
