Learning outcomes

The aim of this Course is to provide students with analytical skills to assess, research and critically debate the legal principles, functioning and main challenges of the EU internal market and the EU trade policy. At the end of the Course the students are expected to have improved their analytical skills, as well as their legal reasoning and their oral and written presentation abilities

Course contents

The course is organised in TWO modules.

Module I

- Basics of EU law and international trade law

- EU internal market: principles and areas of intervention

- Common Commercial Policy of the EU: principles and areas of intervention

Module II

-Sustainable development, protection of the environment and international trade

- Trade relations between the EU and third countries (especially China, UK and US)

- New frontiers of the EU digital single market

Teaching methods

The course is organized in two different parts following the division in modules.

The first part is composed of traditional lectures aimed at introducing the students to the core tenets of the discipline.

The second part is composed of traditional lectures and seminars, and is aimed to provide occasions for in-depth discussions of class materials on topics relevant for the MA.

Assessment methods

Assessing the students' acquisition of expected knowledge and abilities is organised as follows:

1) Mid-term exam at the end of the Module I in order to verify the acquired knowledge. The test is composed of closed and open questions - 2 hours. No supporting documents are allowed.

2) Short essay deepening a topic tackled during the course in order to verify the students' capacity of managing and critically discuss the topics tackled during the lectures and the seminars. The essay shall be sent by 7 days before the exam date.  

The participation during the class will be taken into consideration for the final score.

Attending students are those who have attended at least the 70% of the lectures.

Teaching tools

Teaching materials for regular attenders (slides, documents, bibiographical references) will be made available on Virtuale before each lecture in order to guarantee their involvement.
