Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the student should know the basic elements of the structure of a personal computer and its operating system, as well as being able to use word processing and spreadsheet programmes.

Course contents

• Meaning and implications of the term digital
• The computer: nature, functions, naming, configuration
• The algorithm and software
• The operating system (MS-Windows) and file management
  Word processing (MS-Word): producing clean, elegant and professional text documents
• Using the spreadsheet (MS-Excel): definition and structure of a spreadsheet, calculation functions, statistical functions, creating charts in Microsoft Excel, exporting/importing data.
• Computer networks and the Internet: standards and protocols of computer networks, structure of the network
• Internet The use of the net for information searching
  Search engines and how they work
• How to plan and choose keywords for inclusion in engines

Lectures.

Guided exercises on the use of application software and searching for information on the Internet.

Assessment methods

The computer lab qualification will be obtained by passing a written test that will be conducted with the computer in a single sitting. The test consists of a test with questions on all the topics in the syllabus (36 questions of the multiple-choice, true/false, YES/NO, short answer type) and possible exercises to be carried out on Word, Excel, searching for information on the Internet. The test is aimed at ascertaining the possession of acquired knowledge and skills. The time allowed for the test is forty minutes.
