Learning outcomes

M-PSI/03: By the end of the laboratory course, the student will master psychological testing administration procedures; will be familiar with data analyses and their use.

M-PSI/08: Upon completion of the workshop, the student: - Is able to identify the differences between various psychotherapeutic approaches from a technical and clinical point of view; - Is able to understand the applications of individual techniques reported to the individual case.

Course contents

M-PSI/03 (Psychometrics Module, Dr. Giulia Casu)

Multivariate inferential statistical analysis techniques: evaluation of experimental hypotheses and the type of variables available for data analysis, choice of the appropriate statistical test, statistical analysis on SPSS, interpretation of the results obtained.

Main statistical models treated in class: descriptive analysis; exploratory factorial analysis; General Linear Model: ANOVA (one-way, multi-way, multivariate, for repeated measurements, mixed model); ANCOVA; Regression analysis (simple linear, multiple); Nonparametric tests: Chi square test.

The Psychometrics module will take place in the first semester (September-January).

Dr. ROBERTO CATTIVELLI module. The clinical perspective in cognitive behavioral therapy: knowledge, skills, and emotions in clinical work. Basic principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy applied to clinical cases. The conceptualization of clinical cases based on cognitive-behavioral principles. Effective treatment techniques for anxiety and affective disorders. Basic principles of assessment with presentation of some tools. Hints regarding treatment in cognitive-behavioral settings.

Dr. SARA GOSTOLI module. Conceptual bases and practical applications of supportive therapy, psycho-education and psychological rehabilitation. Explanation of the differences between the different types of psychological interventions and basic information about psychotherapy models.

Teaching methods

M-PSI/03 (Psychometrics Module, Dr. Giulia Casu)

The lessons will be organized in practical exercises in the computer room with the SPSS statistical package; the exercises will be individual or in small groups.

M-PSI/08 (Clinical Psychology Module, Dr. Roberto Cattivelli & Dr. Sara Gostoli)

Small group work, clinical case presentations, video screenings of sessions with patients, role-playing, simulated psychological interviews, and practice on psychological assessment interviews are planned.

Assessment methods

Attendance at all the classes is mandatory and it will be registered by personal signature. Only those participants who actively attended all the classes will be admitted to the final exam.

The skills acquired will be verified through a practical exercise, which will take place in the computer room, using the SPSS statistical package and data provided by the teacher.

M-PSI/08 (Clinical Psychology Module, Dr. Roberto Cattivelli & Dr. Sara Gostoli)

Eligibility will be awarded in relation to active participation in class and passing a final individual written test (a short essay) related to the topics covered in class. This final test will take place during the final meeting of the workshop.

Teaching tools

M-PSI/03 (Psychometrics Module, Dr. Giulia Casu)

For the practical application of the topics addressed in the laboratory, the teacher will provide teaching materials. Lessons will take place in the computer room, students will have access to the computers in the computer room where the SPSS statistical package is installed; the lecturer will use the video projector and the laboratory PC to illustrate the statistical analyses being studied.
