Course contents

The class is divided into 2 distinctive parts: One is led by Professor Facchini, and the other one is led by Dr. Miriam Benfatto.

Students from Studi storici e orientalistici are free to choose which part of the course to attend.

Part I

The representation of Jesus in contemporary culture: cinema, art, historiography

Aim of the course is to analyze representations of Jesus in films, historiography and fiction starting from the nineteenth century, in order to offer a wide analysis of the relationship between media and religion, in parallel to the dissemination of historical portrays of Jesus. The course aims to explore how modern culture portrayed the life of Jesus, who was destined to became not just a religious icon but a modern myth.

Part II

The Quest for the Historical Jesus: sources and historiographical perspectives

The course is intended to offer an introduction to the Historical Jesus and the Quest for the Historical Jesus. The first part of the course will present the main themes inherent in the historical existence of Jesus, accompanied by a cultural and religious context of the first Jesus movement. The sources will be presented through critical reading, using a multidisciplinary approach. The second part will focus on historiographic research and its phases, in which the classical paradigm will be challenged, and will be presented a new approach that takes into account the new acquisitions and perspectives of current scientific and academic research.

Students will be provided with a syllabus containing the detailed program, objectives, topics and bibliographic materials for each lesson.

For part I, students who attend are expected to write a short paper of 20/25 pages. Instructions about it will be provided during class, and published in the online app IOL.

Teaching methods

Lectures are organized as a seminar. Students' participation is highly recommended

Assessment methods

Students who attend regularly must write a paper of 20/30 pages on topics analyzed and discussed during classes. Instructions for the paper will be provided during class, and available on the IOL app.

Oral exam for other students. Questions will deal with general themes, and in his/her answer, the student should show his capacity to go into specific details. Among the elements that concur in the final evaluation there are: detailed knowledge of the book's content, property of language, and especially the capacity of organizing the information – also deriving from different sources – into complex answers showing expositive and critical skills.

Proper language and the ability to critically speak about the books' content will lead to a good/excellent final grade

Acceptable language and the ability to resume the books' content will lead to a sufficient/fair grade.

Insufficient linguistic proficiency and fragmentary knowledge of the books' content will lead to a failure in passing the exam.
