Learning outcomes

The graduate student:  - is able to plan and realise educational paths which can support an autonomous personal construction of the identity; - is able to create, in the services where he/she operates, an environment and a context of active learning; - is able to educate to empathy; - is able to reflect on the construction of the identity (at a crossing between social negotiations, cultural elements, conditioning, historical phases, affiliations, encounters and conflicts of individuals or groups, identity and family modelling etc.); - is able to enhance – in him/herself and the others – the intertwining of emotional and cognitive processes in the educational relationship.

Course contents

In spite of the cultural turning point introduced by the now well-known British school of gender studies (which opened the debate on gender categories and demonstrated the social and cultural nature of the "female" and "male" intended as true conceptual constructs or models), a serious reflection on gender identity and gender differences  (regarding power and opportunity), both on political and educational levels is still missing within the Italian cultural and social context. At the same time, this sort of reflection on gender roles is central to the overall education of the individual, and the development of:

1)         Education in equal and democratic dialogue;

2)         Education in mutual respect and a respect of differences (be they cognitive, gender-related, cultural, religious, etc.);

3)         Education in breaking down stereotypes, prejudice.

The concepts of gender education and a respect of differences thus represent a challenge for educators and care givers, which elicits new questions and reveals behaviors, styles and knowledge which are not yet - or not at all – a part of routine "intentionally educational" practices adopted in Italian schools, kindergartens or other educational services.
