JTI ARTEMIS

The man in the control-loop of a complex system is being exposed to physiological, psychological and time stress that lead to a human cognitive decrement, thus diminishing performances and safety of the

overall system: this is becoming the limiting factor in increasing system's functionality and, hence, their operational capability.

In a set of different domains like next-generation flight-management systems for aircraft, UAV for Civil and security applications, Infrastructure Management Systems and high-speed Driver Assistance

Systems in the rail domain and in large and complex industrial plants, adaptive cognitive man-machine interface and human-centered communication can be exploited to improve the level of operational performances and safety.

The CAMMI Project developed technologies for intelligent multi-modal interactive systems especially addressing the user's interaction with adaptive context-aware systems. Application relevance is focused on Advanced Multidimensional Cockpit Displays and Flight Management

Systems in the aircraft, although broader range of application was envisaged such as complex process plants and on-board embedded MMI applications of a modern agricultural machine.

The CAMMI goal is to introduce a joint-cognitive approach into controlling operator's console where a workload exceeding the operator's capability should reflect in off-loading non-critical, time-consuming

tasks to automation strategies providing the sharing of task control between operators and system, allowing them to focus their capability in critical tasks only. The CAMMI project proposed a functional demonstrator consisting of a synthetic environment stimulating a MMI mock-up, to emulate operations related to a predefined set of cockpit procedures. In order to achieve adaptive control systems, the CAMMI demonstrator provides a Cognitive Supervisor Agent selecting MMI operating modes out of the available ones, and balancing the induced workload with pilot's cognitive capability.
