My current research project focuses on the relationship between language and identity construction in Afro-descendant communities in Colombia—a country whose sociolinguistic and cultural diversity provides a privileged framework for analysing how processes of racialisation have developed and become consolidated in language; how these processes have contributed to the production of hegemonic and discriminatory identity discourses; and how, today, Afro-descendant communities themselves activate counter-discursive resistance dynamics aimed at subverting such discourses, which remain deeply rooted in Colombian society. The project seeks to understand these phenomena from an interdisciplinary and intersectional perspective, integrating approaches from sociolinguistics, anthropology, history, and cultural studies.
With the aim of building a broader perspective, the project is being carried out in cooperation with various academic institutions, including Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó - Diego Luis Córdoba (UTCH), Universidad de Cartagena and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. This collaborative network seeks to establish scientific synergies, promote methodological exchange, and foster the development of comparative research on Afro-descendant communities in the region. Likewise, the network aims to modernise and contribute to the internationalisation and accessibility of peripheral universities, to intensify in a constructive and dialogic way the cooperation with institutions such as the University of Bologna and others in associated countries (here I would include Bern, Basel, and others), and to promote intercultural awareness and mutual understanding.
As the first activity within this cooperation network, the workshop Negritudes y lenguajes en el mundo iberoamericano: Perspectivas interseccionalestook place in September, organised in collaboration with Yvette Bürki (Bern University) and Alba García Agüero (Basel University).
