Description:
In September, the first interdisciplinary workshop Negritudes and Languages in the Ibero-American World: Intersectional Perspectives took place, co-organized by Yvette Bürki (University of Bern), Alba García Agüero (University of Basel), and Marcello Giugliano (University of Bologna). Adopting an openly intersectional perspective, the workshop was structured into three thematic sections. The first, “Negritudes, Languages, and Identities,” analyzed the relationship between language and identity in Spanish-speaking Afro-descendant communities, including those in contact with indigenous languages or multilingual repertoires, such as those of the Equatoguinean diaspora. The second section, “Negritude and Racialization,” examined the processes through which bodies and linguistic practices become markers of racial discrimination. It also discussed the structural effects of racialization, evident in educational, labor, and healthcare inequalities. The third section, “Negritude and Resistance,” focused on cultural expressions, such as music, literature, and cinema, in which language functions as a space for agency, challenge, and the creation of new Black identities, especially at the intersection with gender and corporeality. The workshop combined presentations by internationally renowned academic specialists with interventions from local activists committed to defending the rights of Afro-descendant communities in various Latin American countries (Mexico, Ecuador, and Cuba). The aim was to promote a dialogue between theory and practice and to foster a “science in action” oriented toward social change. The event concluded with a roundtable reflecting on the role and risks of intersectionality as an analytical and critical tool, as well as on the future challenges and opportunities for the study of Negritude in the Spanish-speaking world. As a result of the workshop, a cooperative project was launched to produce a monographic publication on the topic (ongoing projetc), along with new collaborations intended to ensure the continuity of the event and consolidate the fruitful dialogues initiated during this first workshop.
