Curriculum vitae

Claudio MELCHIORRI  was born in Genoa, Italy, on 23 October, 1959. After the military duties, he obtained the Laurea Degree in Electronic Engineering in 1985 and the PhD in 1990, at the University of Bologna. In 1985, he started his research activity at DEIS, Dipartimento di Elettronica Informatica e Sistemistica of the University of Bologna, where in 1990 became a Research Associate and in 2001 Full Professor in Robotics. Currently he is with DEI, the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Energia Elettrica e dell'Informazione.

In the periodo 2007-2013, he has been Chair of the Laurea and Laurea Magistrale (Bachelor and Master) degrees  in "Automation Engineering" at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bologna, and has been the Coordinator of the PhD. Program in "Control Systems Engineering and Operational Research" from 2004 to 2010. In the period 2014-2016 he has been the Coordinator of the PhD. Program in Biomedical, Electrical and System Engineering at DEI. He is the responsible of the AlmaTong educational and scientific program, in cooperation with the Tongji University, Shanghai, China, where, since 2015 he holds the position of "High End Expert" from the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.

Since 2014 he is member of the Accademia delle Scienze, Istituto di Bologna.

Currently, he is the Director of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi".

He has participated to and coordinated several research projects in robotics, automatic control and automation, both at the national and international level. His research interests include robotics (dexterous manipulation, telemanipulation, haptic systems, advanced sensors), control theory (non linear control, passivity, robust control), and motion control (electric motors, trajectory planning, hw/sw real-time control systems).

He has been appointed as ``Adjunct Associate in Engineering'' at the Dept. of Electrical Eng., Univ. of Florida, Gainesville, FL, in 1988 and as "Visiting Scientist" at the Artificial Intelligence Lab., MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, for periods in 1990 and 1991.

He is "Senior Member" of IEEE, member of the IFAC Technical Committee on Robotics and of the IFAC Technical Committee on Mechatronics. He has been member of the Editorial Boards of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation and of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the IFAC Journal on Mechatronics in 2003-2008, and he is member of the Editorial Board of the Int. Journal of Robotics and Autonomous Systems, of the Journal on Control Engineering Practice, of the IFAC Journal on Mechatronics.
He has served in the Program Committees of several international conferences, organizing sessions, workshops and tutorials, and has been Chair of the National Organizing Committee of the 8th IFAC Symposium on Robot Control, SYROCO 2006, Bologna, Sept.  6-8, 2006. He has been Chair of the National Organizing Committee del 4th IFAC Workshop on on Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Methods for Non Linear Control, Bertinoro, I, Ago. 29 - Sett. 1, 2012; he is Chair of the IPC of the 11th IFAC Symposium on Robot Control, SYROCO 2015, Salvador, Brasil.

He is author or coauthor of about 300 scientific papers presented at conferences or published in journals, of 6 books on digital control, and he is coeditor of 7 books on robotics. He is author of two industrial patents on automatic machines.
