Curriculum vitae

Claudio MELCHIORRI  graduated in 1985 in Electronic Engineering and obtained the PhD in 1990 at the University of Bologna. He began his research activity in 1985 at DEIS, the Department of Computer Electronics and Systems of the University of Bologna, where in 1990 he became a Researcher and in 2001 Full Professor in Industrial Robotics. He currently is with DEI, the Department of Electrical Energy and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi".

In the period 2007 - 2013 he was President of the Course of Studies in Automation Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bologna, and in the period 2004-2010 he was Coordinator of the PhD program in "Automation and Operations Research" at DEIS. From 2014 to 2016 he was Coordinator of the PhD program in “Biomedical, Electrical and Systems Engineering” (IBES). He is in charge of the Almatong program, an educational and scientific cooperation with Tongji University, Shanghai, China, where since 2015 he has also held the position of "High End Expert" of the Chinese University Ministry.

Since 2014 he has been a member of the Academy of Sciences, Institute of Bologna, and since 2020 he is Fellow of the IEEE. He was Director of the Department of Electrical, Energy and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi" in the period 2015-2021, and is currently the Rector's Delegate for Relations with Businesses and Industrial Research.

He has participated, also with coordination roles, in numerous national and international research projects on robotics, automatic control and industrial automation. His research interests include robotics (manipulation, telemanipulation, haptic systems, sensors), control theory (non-linear control, robust, robust control) and motion control (electric motors, trajectories, real-time control systems).

He was "Adjunct Associate in Engineering" at the Dept. of Electrical Ing., Univ. Of Florida, Gainesville, FL, in 1988 and "Visiting Scientist" at the Artificial Intelligence Lab., MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, for periods in 1990 and 1991.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE, member of the IFAC Technical Committee on Robotics and of the IFAC Technical Committee on Mechatronics. He was a member of the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation and of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics. He was Editor-in-Chief of the IFAC Journal on Mechatronics in the period 2003-2008, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Int. Journal of Robotics and Autonomous Systems, of the Journal on Control Engineering Practice, of the IFAC Journal on Mechatronics. He has collaborated as a member of the Program Committees in the organization of numerous international conferences, organizing sessions, workshops and tutorials, and as an "invited lecturer". He was Chair of the National Organization Committee of the 8th IFAC Symposium on Robot Control, SYROCO 2006, held in Bologna, 6-8 September 2006. He was Chair of the National Organization Committee of the 4th IFAC Workshop on Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods for non Linear control, held in Bertinoro, I, Ago. 29 - Sept. 1, 2012; he was Chair of the IPC of the 11th IFAC Symposium on Robot Control, SYROCO 2015, Salvador, Brazil.

He is the author or co-author of about 320 scientific publications, of 6 books on automatic controls or robotics, and he is co-editor of 7 robotics books. He is the inventor of two patents.
