Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student possesses the technical knowledge for vital signs assessment, blood pressure measurement, pulse oximetry, ABC, preparation of intravenous infusions, intramuscular injection technique, and arterial blood gas sampling.

Course contents

  • Introduction to the organization of the territorial and hospital emergency health system
  • Definition of the concepts of urgency, emergency, and severity
  • Definition and approach to “at-risk” patients awaiting the Medical Emergency Team (MET) or 1-1-8 Emergency Medical Service (EMS)
  • Primary assessment of conscious patients following the ABCDE schema
  • Criteria for easing the Rapid Response System by the “afferent arm” and calling procedure
  • First aid interventions for major illnesses and traumas
  • Preparation and integration with the MET
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Basic Life Support (PBLSD), adult and pediatric airway management, and management of massive hemorrhages
  • Overview of Non-Technical Skills (NTS) in emergency management
  • Organization and understanding of specialized medical equipment for emergency management
  • Review of scientific literature on specific techniques for:
    • Venous blood sampling and blood cultures
    • Arterial blood gas sampling
