Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student has basic knowledge of epidemiology and the general principles of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of infectious and multifactorial diseases and of safety measures in sports facilities. In particular, the student is able to: -Promote health education in different activities - Use the knowledge acquired on the hygiene and safety standards of sports facilities.
Course contents
Definition and aims of Hygiene and Public Health.
Definition of Health.
Population health and its determinants.
Measuring the frequency of health events: ratio, rate, proportion, incidence and prevalence of diseases.
Measuring the risk of diseases: relative risk (RR) and attributable risk (AR).
Causal inference in epidemiology.
Basic general prevention: aims and methods of prevention. Primary prevention, secondary prevention, tertiary prevention.
Health education.
General epidemiology of infectious diseases: general aspects, reservoirs and sources of infection. Routes of entry and elimination of infective agents. Direct and indirect transmission (through inanimate vehicles and vectors) of infectious diseases. Ways in which diseases may appear in the population (sporadic, endemic, epidemic and pandemic).
General prophylaxis for infectious diseases: Notification of infectious diseases, making diagnosis (direct and indirect); quarantine measures. Disinfection and sterilisation using physical methods and chemical methods. General concepts of disinfestation. Vaccine prophylaxis and Seroprophylaxis.
Biological risks during sport and physical activities and theie prevention.
General prophylaxis for non-communicable diseases: general concepts, risk factors and prevention.
The role of physical activity to preventing diseases.
Hygiene and safety in sport facilities.

Assessment methods
Exam session: there are at least 7 exam dates a year.
1st session (January-February): 3 exam dates
2nd session (June-July): 2 exam dates
3rd session (September): 2 exam dates
Exam of “Hygiene and Pharmacology-Integrated Course” includes a written exam of General and Applied Hygiene (6CFU) and a written test of General Pharmacology (3 CFU).
Prerequisites: Human Physiology (C.I.)

The written test of “General and Applied Hygiene” course unit consists of:
-30 multiple choice questions and 1 open-ended question. The score will be so assigned: +1 point for each correct answer, 0 points for each wrong answer or not given.
Examples and details will be shown during the lessons.
Students have up 80 minutes to complete the written test.
The validity of the written text is 12 months.
During the written test it is NON allowed to use books, notes, and devices connected to the Internet (tablets, smartphones, etc.).
The student will get a mark, for each course unit. The two partial marks, in proportion to the number of credits, contribute to the final mark. The student passes the exam if he/she takes at least 18/30 in each course unit.
