Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the movements and problems of the Italian Theatrical Literature. The student can be learn the ability to analyze texts in relation to forms and dialog functions and stage. The course program includes the relationship between literary text, dramatic text and its staging, with particular attention to the extra-textual elements (scenography, music) contained in the modern dramatic text.

The great twentieth-century dramas: Luigi Pirandello, Eduardo De Filippo and the "Neapolitans"

First part

From novels to theater: the unique acts of Luigi Pirandello

After some introductory lessons on Pirandello theatrical poetry, the unique acts will be analyzed in relation to the narrative texts of their origin.

DVDs will be used for some texts from the sillabus.

Non-attendees students are also required to read one of following theatrical texts:

- Gli atti unici di Pirandello, Agrigento, Centro Nazionale di Studi pirandelliani, 1978.

- P. Briganti, Luigi Pirandello. Dalle novelle al teatro, Milano, B. Mondadori, 1991.

Second part

Eduardo’s dramaturgy and Annibale Ruccello and Manlio Santanelli’s Theater

This part provides the textual and thematic analysis of Natale in casa Cupiello, Napoli milionaria and Sabato, domenica e lunedì by Eduardo De Filippo; Le cinque rose di Jennifer by Annibale Ruccello; Bellavita Carolina by Manlio Santanelli.

DVDs will be used for some texts from the sillabus.

Non-attendees students are required to read one of following theatrical texts:

- E. Fiore, Il rito, l’esilio e la peste: percorsi nel nuovo teatro napoletano: Manlio Santanelli, Annibale Ruccello, Enzo Moscato, Milano, Ubulibri, 2002.
