Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will have a basic knowledge of the Ethiopian culture and history. The student will be able to discuss the  subjects examined during the classes and contextualize them with reference to the assigned texts.

Course contents

Amharic language, grammar and text reading. The course will analyse the main aspects of the languages, culture and history of Ethiopia, with a special focus on religion, gender and insitituitions. Part of the course will be devoted to the ethno-history of Ethiopia.

Zeleke Eresso, Amarico per chi parla italiano, Bologna, Emil, 2016.

D. N. Levine, Greater Ethiopia: the Evolution of a Multiethnic Society, University of Chicago Press (2nd. ed.), 2000

 

Students who will not attend the course, will read another text that has to be arranged in advance with Prof. Taddia.

Assessment methods

An oral exam, during which the student will be evaluated according to the linguistic abilities he/she has acquired during the course. The students not attending the course will be evaluated through an oral exam covering all the assigned texts. To obtain the maximum evaluation, you will have to show that you are familiar with the main events of the history of Ethiopia and that you have reached an intermediate knowledge of the Amharic language.
