Course contents
Module: Medicinal chemistry (3 CFU)
The medicine: basic concepts, and approaches to drug discovery.
Process of action of a drug and phases of the process of action.
Molecular basis of the action of drugs: molecular target and drug-target interactions.
Pharmacokinetic phase: absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination of a drug.
Drugs and biotechnology: penicillins, artemisinin.
Biotechnological drugs.
Module: Technologies for the proteomics
Evaluation of the key issues related to the characterization and definition of the analytical profile of biopharmaceuticals and biosimilars.
Quality control of biotechnological drugs: qualitative and quantitative methods. Liquid chromatography: principles and approaches. Selection criteria for the chromatographic method. Use of mass spectrometry for the qualitative analysis of biopharmaceuticals: types of mass spectrometers, applications of mass spectrometry to the characterization of biopharmaceuticals and quality control. Hyphenated analytical techniques: HPLC-UV and HPLC-MS and their application in the analysis of peptides and proteins.
Spectroscopic techniques based on polarized light: optical rotation and circular dichroism (CD): determination of the secondary structure of peptides and proteins. Application of circular dichroism to the characterization of biopharmaceuticals, the determination of their stability and activity, and quality control.
Determination of drug - protein interactions by affinity chromatography: immobilization of receptors, enzymes and transport proteins; determination of the activity of new compounds and their distribution parameters.

Assessment methods
The exam will assess the knowledge of the basic concepts of the pharmaceutical disciplines, with particular regard to the molecular basis of drug action and the analytical techniques used in proteomics investigations. The two modules will be assessed separately and the final score will be calculated as the average score of the modules.
