Learning outcomes

Aims of the course:

  • To present the general concepts of the occupational medicine;
  • To present the most common occupational diseases;
  • To introduce the diagnostic framework and the management of selected occupational diseases.

Course contents

Course contents (16 lectures, 1 hour each)

 

Part A: introductory lectures that will focus on the general concepts and on the methods applied in the field of Occupational Medicine

Lecture 1 Introduction to occupational medicine (history, statistics, scientific framework, aims)

Lecture 2 Reference legislative frame. The role of the occupational physician. Mandatory reports and certifications

Lecture 3 Classification of occupational risk factors (physical, chemical, biological agents, biomechanical and relational factors).

Lecture 4 Introduction to occupational toxicology and hygiene

 

Part B: lectures on specific occupational diseases. The focus will be on those conditions with the higher population burden. Every lecture will be structured in the following section: general characteristics, epidemiology, aetiology (with particular focus on occupational risk factors), diagnostic standards, patient’s management, preventive strategies.

Lecture 5 Work-related cancers I: general concepts, neoplasm that are frequently caused by occupational risk factors (high occupational etiological fraction)

Lecture 6 Work-related cancers II: high incidence neoplasms also related to occupational risk factors (low occupational etiological fraction)

Lecture 7 Musculoskeletal disorders I (spine diseases/disorders)

Lecture 8 Musculoskeletal disorders II and peripheral entrapment neuropathies (upper limb diseases/disorders)

Lecture 9 Metal toxicity (lead, chromium, nickel)

Lecture 10 Toxicity of aromatic solvents (toluene, xylene, styrene), aliphatic solvents (n-esane) and ketones (acetone)

Lecture 11 Work-related skin disorders

Lecture 12 Occupational hearing loss and barotrauma

Lecture 13 Work-related respiratory diseases (asthma, allergic alveolitis, pneumoconiosis, BPCO)

Lecture 14 Reproductive hazards in the workplace. Legislation for the protection of working mothers

 

Part C: special topics

Lecture 15 Occupational medicine in the healthcare work setting

Lecture 16 Psychosocial risk factors in the workplace. Models for job-stress. Bullying, mobbing, and burnout
