- Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 8415)
Learning outcomes
The students will study the morphological changes caused by the disease processes and the basic reactions to etiologic agents in cells and tissues, together with the pathogenetic mechanism of their development. This educational laboratory will enable the student to recognize the microscopic alterations in cells and tissues characteristic of the pathologic processes, by the study of general histopathology which will be hold in parallel to the course of General Pathology and Physiopathology.
Course contents
1. Cellular and extracellular pathology: reversible cell injury and fatty change, amyloidosis, necrosis and infarction.
2. Neoplastic transformation: benign tumors, malignant tumors, metastases.
3. Inflammatoryand reparative response: acute inflammation, chronic nonspecific and granulomatous inflammation, granulation tissue, sclerosis, cirrhosis.
4. Vascular disease: medial calcific artheriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, thrombosis.

Teaching methods
This is a blended learning teaching including 11 lectures, to
explain the topics, and 11 practical lessons in the laboratory of
histopathology. The e-learning will be performed on the platform
Moodle, access to which students must register using the
credentials of the University.
Assessment methods
The learning level will be assessed at the end of classes. The learning assessment will be carried on together with the oral test of General Pathology and Physiopathology and will include the examination of a slide at light microscopy. The student must be able to recognize the histological preparation and discuss the morphologic alterations in relation to the knowledge acquired about the subject in the course of General Pathology and Physiopathology.
Teaching tools
On the platform Moodle, students can find a forum for discussion and educational material, consisting of explanatory presentations, image galleries, and self-assessment tests divided by subject. You can also access the learning platform for virtual microscopy, which provides the digital version of the histological slides, videos and explanatory hypertext.
