  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)

Learning outcomes

The students acquire the basic knowledge of laboratory tools and techniques. In particular they learn how to: safely handle chemical substances,  use IUPAC nomenclature and IS units, perform stoichiometric calculi and prepare solutions, collect and process experimental data, correlate experimental data with theory.

Course contents

Safety in chemistry laboratories. Experimental error. Expressions of concentration. Basic laboratory equipment and techniques. Synthesis of inorganic compounds. Equilibrium.  Acid-base and redox titrations. Basic elements of stoichiometry.

Readings/Bibliography

Lecture notes and handbook will be handed by the teacher and will be available on line.

The topics of this course can be found in any university textbook of General Chemistry. See, for example:

P. Atkins, L. Jones "Principi di Chimica", 2nd edition, Zanichelli editore, 2005.

Teaching methods

The lectures will cover the general problematics related to laboratory activity: safety, language, design, data processing. The course also includes:- demonstrations of stoichiometry problems; preliminary introduction and demonstration of laboratory exercises; practical laboratory exercises aimed at developing basic skills required to carry out laboratory activities.

Assessment methods

Oral examination.

Teaching tools

Blackboard; personal computer, video projector.
