Learning outcomes

Students are expected to have a good knowledge of the main theoretical issues in the field of Translation Studies and to be able to produce effective translations of different text types.

Course contents

The course is divided in:

This course is aimed to deepen the study of French as a foreign language addressing issues and linguistic problems of translation. The final written exam involves the translation of a passage from Italian to French, accompanied by a commentary on the translation strategies employed.

Educational objectives :

Knowledge of written and spoken language through the translation of texts chosen to:

- deepen the morphological, lexical, syntectic study of the language

- Address and resolve issues specific language (register, variant, idioms, lexical and semantic fields etc.).

- Verify in practice the concepts of translation theory

- Discuss and assume one's translation choices

- Compare them with published translations

- Be able to produce a critical comparative analysis of the translations.

General educational objectives

¨       Besides the objectives achieved during the three-year degree (see the work plan - ThÃÆ'¨me 3rd year), this course is aimed to develop intercultural competence in students, through a careful interlinguistical analysis of texts of various types.

 

¨       identify the characteristics of the recipients and work on the text, if necessary, so that the translation can satisfy their needs and expectations; to reflect on the context of use and formulate hypotheses for an adequate translation.

¨       stimulate the re- construction of the meaning and significance in a process of adaptation to the culture / language of destination: think about the communication between French and Italian culture, discover points in common and differences (are there shared cultural references?), make available the experience of other cultures, promote the reciprocal exchange in order to avoid ethnocentrism

 

¨       compare the original texts / published translations and formulate reasoned criticism.

ÃÆ'Ëœ   OFFICIAL COURSE ( 2ND  semester - C. NANNONI)

Translation and translation studies: teorie, approaches, pratices 

The course will provide an overview of the main issues in translation studies that have been debated in the history of reflection on the translation, illustrated through practical examples referring to different types of texts and various genres of translation. Priority will be given to the areas of literary translation, editorial translation, intersemiotic translation, audio-visual translation and translation for children.

The student will be asked to reflect on the issues raised by the comparison between the original texts and translations produced and published (translation criticism) and to formulate hypotheses of translation on the basis of criteria and strategies that will be discussed and defined, in reference to the variables involved in the various cases.

A key role will also have training in documentary and lexicographical / lexicological research and the reflection on the context of use of any translation produced.

a)       following a path of progressive difficulties, students will be given a text to be translated for the next lesson

b)      during the next lesson: sentence by sentence, possible translations will be shared, discussed and corrected.

 


OFFICIAL COURSE

L ectures will be accompanied by practical exercises, to do individually or in small groups, and by the discussion of translation problems and possible translation strategies.

Assessment methods

The written exam on the language component of the course (esercitazioni), must also be passed before the exam of the official course. It will count for the determination of the final mark.

During the exam students can use : monolingual French dictionary, monolingual Italian dictionary  and French thesaurus.

Written test  ( 4 hours). May, September, January

Evaluation:

The final written exam will consist of a translation of a text of about 400 words. The evaluation in 30/30 will consider errors in: morpho-syntax/phraseology ( - 0.5 points); vocabulary (- 0.25 point) and the respect of the literary genre of the text-tone, style, register of language and context of use.

 

  1. THE EXAM OF THE OFFICIAL COURSE consist of
  1. A short essay (7-10 pages) written in French about a topic linked to the course and / or linked to the student's particular interests, subject to prior approval by the Professor. The essay should be sent by email to the teacher at least ten days before the oral exam and also materially delivered in paper.
  2. The oral exam consists of a discussion of the student's written essay and expanding on some theoretical issues concerning the whole program.

EVALUATION

The evaluation of the essay will take into account the articulation of the chosen topic, the relevance of bibliographic references, the clarity, the capacity of personal reflection on the material and the ideas proposed in class, and the linguistic accuracy of the work. Individual analysis of specific cases of translation, chosen from the text types presented, will be especially appreciated.

The oral exam will evaluate the student's ability to present his work, the ability to argue his own choices and statements, the ability to put his work in relation to the rest of the program, the language skills of production, understanding and oral interaction.
