Learning outcomes

The student is expected to gain an overview of the history of ancient Christian literature between the 1st and the 8th century. He should arrive to appreciate its connections with the classical and the eastern Christian literatures, the literary genres which were more common and the history of the reception of ancient Christian texts.

Course contents

The Whitch of Endor (1st Samuel 28): An Episode of Biblical Necromancy and its Interpretation from Origen to Augustine.

Readings/Bibliography

Main reference text: Origene, Eustazio, Gregorio di Nissa, La maga di Endor, a cura di Manlio Simonetti (Biblioteca Patristica, 15), Nardini Editore, Firenze 1989. A detailed bibliography will be available for the students at the beginning of the course.

Teaching methods

A general presentation with specific introductions and readings of some of the texts.

Assessment methods

Oral examination on the texts and the bibliography, with different modalities according to the specificity of the study program.
