Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to provide student with an understanding of the evolution of world economy in the last century, giving a particular emphasis to tourism. On completion of the course, the student should be able to analyse the market integration process, the success of new forms of enterprises, the emergence of new patterns of consumption with regard tourism sector. Besides he is expected to understand the factors that permitted products to be successful or to be unsuccessful on the Internationl tourist market in the XXth century. Finally it should be able to value the impact of economic policies, cultural changes, market integration, forms of enterprises on tourism trends in XXth century economy

2. The industrial revolution

3. The emergence of modern tourism: seaside and spa tourism

4. The emergence of modern tourism:  mountain and natural parks tourism
5. The age of mass tourism in Europe and in the United States

6. The consumer society

7 Tourism in the Mediterranean countries

8. Tourism in the post-modern age
9. Congress tourism: seminar held by Stefania Agostini, general manager of the Riviera di Rimini Convention Bureau 

10, The hotels history
11. The evolution of tourist destination management

12. The role played by tourism in the Italian economic development
13. Some case studies: Lido di Venezia and the élite tourism; Rimini and the mass tourism; the Costa Smeralda and the planned development
14. Two different path of mountain resorts development: the Trentino alto adige and the Abruzzo

Assessment methods

The exam is aimed at evaluating the skills and the critical abilities developed by the students

The exam is composed of a written test, with 6 open questions. 

It is not possible to bring books, personal notes or electronic devices in the exam. Registration for the exam is compulsory, and students have to register throughAlmaEsami according to the general rules of the School of Economics, Management and Statistics.

The mark is out of 30 points, and the minimum required to pass the exam is 18 / 30.
