Learning outcomes

The student is expected to gain an overview of the history of ancient Christian literature between the 1st and the 8th century. He should arrive to appreciate its connections with the classical and the eastern Christian literatures, the literary genres which were more common and the history of the reception of ancient Christian texts.

Course contents

«Flowers of the desert»: Monastic Literature in Palestine from the 4th to the 7th century.

Readings/Bibliography

A bibliography will be made available for the students at the beginning of the course.

Teaching methods

A general presentation with specific introductions and readings of some of the texts.

Assessment methods

Oral examination on the texts and the bibliography, with different modalities according to the specificity of the study program.
