Learning outcomes

Design methods for digital communication systems, both narrowband and wideband, for wired and wireless channels.

Course contents

Introduction to wireless systems.
Elements of detection, estimation and digital transmission theory.
The wireless channel.  Performance evaluation in the presence of co-channel interference and fading. Countermeasures techniques (adaptive equalization, diversity).  
Introduction to multiple antenna systems (MIMO).
Multiple access techniques.
Cellular communications: frequency reuse.
Spread spectrum techniques, OFDM.
Third generation cellular systems (UMTS).
Seminars on GSM, UMTS and DVB-T standards.
