Learning outcomes

Aim of the course is to supply deep knowledge on different topics of the Greek society during the I millennium BC., providing the critical tools for a correct comprehension of the archaeological documentation.

Course contents

A. The Greeks in Italy. From the Myceneans contacts to the historical colonisation. The provenance of colonist from various areas of Greece. The main Greek cities of Sicily and Magna Graecia. The cities and their territories: urban planning and settlement procedures. The agorai. The sanctuaries.

B.  The Greeks in Italy. Outlines of the history of art and material culture of the western Greek world.

The course will begin september 30, 2013. During the first lesson will be given instructions about the course and  the exam.

Students taking the exam for 6 CFU must prepare A or B. Student with 12 CFU must prepare A and B

Teaching methods

Teaching method consists of head-on lessons. All students will have the chance to supplement the lectures of the course with practice in laboratory among the didactic proposals of the Department of Archaeology.

Assessment methods

The examen consist in an oral test (in italian) concerning the provenance of colonist from variuos areas of Greece, urban planning and settlement procedures, agorai, sanctuaries and artistic and monumental productions. It is required knowledge of indicated bibliography for A and/or B.

Teaching tools

During the lessons visual aids will be widely used, especially projections from computer (power point).Explanatory paper materials, concerning specific subjects of the course, will be handed out in classroom.
