Learning outcomes

The course provides students with the basic economic, social, demographic, political, institutional and cultural tools for understanding the contemporary History of Europe and of the main referential countries according to the foreign languages they can choose. Moreover, the course enables students to autonomously develop a further knowledge at a higher level and to use it to analyze other general or specific historical and cultural matters.

Course contents

The course aims to provide students with a general knowledge about contemporary History, focusing on European countries. Particular attention will be paid to some key aspects of the History of the Twentieth Century (revolutions, totalitarianism, World Wars, Decolonization, International Relations, the Cold War, breakdown of communist regimes, Globalization).

Periodization in contemporary History; World War I; Russian Revolution; the first post-war period in Europe; Fascism in Italy; the United States and Europe in the '30; Nazism; Colonialism/ Imperialism; Spanish Civil War; beginnings of World War II; Antifascism in Europe; Racism and Extermination of the Jews; Dictatorships/totalitarianisms; the new order after 1945; the European Reconstruction; Bipolarism and Cold War; Republican Italy from the post-war period until today; the European Communities and the International Community; the end of the communist world; Europe today.

Assessment methods

Oral exam. In order to pass the exam student will need to take the text-books they chose to the exam, one from “List A”, the other one from “List B”.
