Learning outcomes
The course aims at developing theoretical and practical skills that are necessary to successfully carry out community interpreting in a helthcare setting in Italy and France. It also provides ethical standards and tools necessary to understand the role, responsibilities and boundaries of the community interpreter.

Language of instruction: French
The module Language and culture (40 hours) will develop and deepen linguistic abilities using respectively written and oral material. The first part will be based on reading and analysis of a variety of texts from different genres (literature, criticism, autobiography, newspaper articles) which deal with the main question “Comment peut-on être français?”. The aims of this part are:
- to discover the linguistic features of different text genres;
- to produce different written texts as summaries, reports, synthesis;
- to produce a written essay using the appropriate linguistic and textual parameters;
- to explore the nature of cultural diversity in France, also to promote critical reflection on the nature and practice of oral and written mediation.
The second part will be based on the analysis and production of oral texts. It will focus in particular on the analysis of the lexis and grammatical structures pertinent to the topics examined. Through such exercises students will be able to familiarize themselves with the appropriate vocabulary and strategies to manage oral difficult situations. Attendance is obligatory.
Dialogue Interpreting (Prof. Elio Ballardini & Prof. Sara Amadori).
Languages of instruction: Italian/French
The purpose of this course (40 hours) is to introduce the third year students of French (first language) to community interpreting, especially in healthcare setting, helping him develop different skills and techniques which represent the basic tools of the profession. The course also provides ethical standards and tools necessary to understand the role, responsibilities and boundaries of community interpreting. Attendance is obligatory.

Teaching methods
Language and Culture
The module will include lectures but also group and pair work to encourage the practical use of the language.
Dialogue interpreting (Prof. Ballardini & Amadori)
Didactics will consist in atheoretical introduction and a practical training with various exercises, such as comprehension and reformulation of oral texts, sight translation (from Italian and French source texts), memorisation, summarisation, cloze tests. Bilingual medical interviews and a full range of real healthcare scenarios will be performed, and students will be asked to play an active role as interpreters.
Assessment methods
Language and culture
The mark for the module will be based on two parts:
- a written exam ( a summary and a written essay using the appropriate linguistic and textual parameters)
- an oral exam which includes discussion of a theme (chosen by the students from a list provided).
Dialogue interpreting (Prof. Ballardini & Amadori)
The exam will consist of two sight translations (Italian > French and French > Italian) and a dialogue (community) interpreting (Italian > French and French > Italian) in a healthcare setting.
